Alves de Sousa has been producing in the Douro valley for 5 generations. This small family winery located in Douro brought amazing innovation to the valley and their wines. Domingos Alves de Sousa is considered a pioneer of Douro wines. Until the late 80s still wines from the region had been forgotten in favor of fortified wines. In fact, they were considered the ‘leftovers’ from Port. Originally Alves de Sousa supplied grapes to the most famous and prestigious Port companies such as Ferreira and Borges. Determined to make his own way as a producer Domingos studied viticulture and winemaking and launched Quinta Da Gaivosa. Since then, the quality and singularity of his wines have been widely recognized.
Alves de Sousa combines both tradition and modernity in its vineyards, winemaking and facilities with their ‘New Old Vineyards’ philosophy combining the the best of Douro’s famous old vineyards with a technically modern, precise and sustainable viticulture to ensure the identity of Douro’s wines and face present and future climate challenges.
5+5 stands for the five generation of the González who have led the company into 21st century, and for the next five generation who will continue a mission based on the good work done so far.
